The Department of World Archaeology of the Faculty of Archaeology at Leiden University invites applications die an Assistant Professor of Roman/Post-Roman Archaeology of the First Millennium AD. We are looking for an enthusiastic lecturer and outstanding researcher with demonstrable teaching experience in Roman and Post-Roman Archaeology of the First Millennium AD. You will have completed a PhD in this area and have demonstrated that you are able independently to set up a line of research about the Archaeology of the First Millennium AD, with a focus on the Mediterranean and/or Northwest Europe. The execution of fieldwork should be central to this line of research. The candidate should also have demonstrated their ability to obtain external research funding.

Preferably you will have international research experience. We are particularly interested in candidates whose perspective extends beyond the strict boundaries of cultural areas and periods, and who have a specific interest in continuity and discontinuity in the Roman cultural area (such as the transition between the Hellenistic and Roman world at the beginning of the millennium, or the transition from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages). In chronological and geographical terms, we are seek to supplement the existing expertise within the Department of World Archaeology.

Preference will be given to an archaeologist who has independently led fieldwork projects and who can contribute with a project to the Field School of the Faculty of Archaeology. Given the fieldwork aspect, a good command of the Dutch and English language is desirable.
