The University of Trier Department of Studies of the Ancient World, History, History of Art, and Political Sciences (Fachbereich III) is advertising a position of Juniorprofessor (m/f/d) (Tenure Track, W1 to W2) for Papyrology.

The study of the classical civilizations of the ancient world (Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome) is an important area of research and of profile development of the University of Trier. A special feature of the university’s portfolio is the presence of a papyrological collection and library, and the position of Professor of Papyrology, which acts as a bridge between other disciplines in the study of the ancient world (Ancient History, Classical Philology, Classical Archaeology, Ancient Philosophy, Egyptology).

The successful candidate for the position advertised will be able to teach papyrology in all its facets. His or her research should focus on the historical and cultural facets of papyrology and allow for fruitful collaboration with other areas of research. The candidate will show his ability for interdisciplinary research through previous publications and research projects focusing on one or more of the followings areas: a) historical, b) political, c) administrative, d) economical or e) cultural development of Graeco-Roman Egypt. Experience in editing Greek papyri, in developing new study courses and curricula, and/or in administrative charges is expected.

The successful candidate’s tasks include the further development of existing curricula, efforts to increase the visibility and impact of the subject, and the curating of the existing papyrological collection. Close cooperation is also expected in the context of the Centre for Ancient Studies (ZAT – Zentrum für Altertumswissenschaften) and the research institute Graeco-Roman Egypt (Forschungszentrum Griechisch-Römisches Ägypten), as well as with existing interdisciplinary research groups in the area of Ancient World Studies at the University of Trier.

A qualified doctorate in a field relevant to the subject, pedagogical aptitude and special qualification for scientific work must be demonstrated. The successful candidate will be expected to immediately offer courses in German language.

The initial employment term (limited term with civil service status) will run for three years and will be extended for another three years, contingent upon a successful interim evaluation. After a final successful evaluation as Juniorprofessor after six years, and provided the general requirements are fulfilled, the candidate will qualify for appointment to a tenured full professorship.
