The History Department at The College of New Jersey invites applications for a tenure-track, assistant professor position starting in August 2016 in Ancient Mediterranean History, with specializations in Ancient Greece and/or Ancient Rome (including Byzantine Empire). The position has an emphasis on cultural exchanges and trans-regional connections between Mediterranean societies and the broader Ancient World (e.g. North African, Mesopotamian, Iranian, Central Eurasian, and Indian Ocean networks).
The successful candidate will be responsible for effective teaching, research in her or his area of study, service, and advising History majors. Specific responsibilities will include teaching both introductory and upper-level courses in Ancient Mediterranean History as well as courses in her or his area of research. The typical teaching load is three courses per semester, along with advising. Department members also regularly teach in the First Seminar Program and offer History core courses. there are opportunities for reduced teaching load.
Required
Ph.D. in History or related discipline in hand by August 2016. Expertise in Ancient Mediterranean history. Language expertise in Latin or Greek, and possibly other relevant languages. Evidence of a strong commitment to the education of undergraduates, including experience teaching at the college level in a US college or university.
Preferred
Specializations in ancient religions, and/or cultural exchanges within the greater ancient world. An appreciable record of success as a teacher and scholar.
