The Department of Comparative Literature and Languages at the University of California, Riverside, invites applicants for a tenure-track position in Classical Studies at the Assistant Professor level. We seek a scholar with a Ph.D. in Classics or a comparable field, with (1) strong abilities in Greek language, literature and culture and (2) expertise in Latin/Roman language, literature and culture or another literary, linguistic and cultural area of the ancient Mediterranean, including North Africa, or area of the comparative study of antiquity. Expertise that extends the boundaries of what has traditionally encompassed Classical Studies, including intersections between Classics and Asian Studies, Medieval Studies, Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies, critical theory and translation studies, and modern reception studies of the Classical world, is especially welcome.
The successful candidate should be prepared to: (1) teach basic and advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in Classics, primarily in Greek and secondarily in Latin and/or the candidate's other area of linguistic and cultural expertise; (2) contribute to our undergraduate programs in Classical Studies, Comparative Program in Ancient Civilizations, and Comparative Literature; and 3) contribute to the graduate program in Comparative Literature, and to the Tri-campus Ph.D. program in Classics as appropriate. The current standard teaching-load is four courses per year on the quarter system.
Minimum requirements are a PhD in Classical Studies or a comparable field; Applicants may be ABD at the time of application; PhD required at time of appointment.
