The Department of Classical Studies at Tulane University invites applications for an assistant professor of ancient science, medicine, or environmental studies. The position is to begin July 1, 2023. We seek a candidate with a strong research trajectory and a commitment to teaching. We welcome applications from scholars of the ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern world(s) in any period through Late Antiquity. Candidates working on the legacy and reception of ancient science, medicine, or environmental studies are also encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach in their area of specialization as well as contribute to introductory courses on the ancient Mediterranean world and/or ancient language teaching. The teaching load is 2-2, with a semester of Junior Research Leave upon successful completion of third-year review.
Faculty in the Department of Classical Studies are actively engaged in interdisciplinary work and regularly collaborate with other departments, programs, and schools, including Art, Anthropology, History, Jewish Studies, Latin American Studies, Law, and Philosophy. We are seeking candidates who will value and be eager to expand such interdepartmental connections, especially those whose research and teaching might enhance interdisciplinary programs in gender and sexuality studies, environmental studies, and science studies.
