Southern Illinois University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor rank to begin August 2024. We seek a broadly trained faculty member with teaching and research expertise in Ancient Rome or late antiquity, with a secondary preference in digital humanities, non-European antiquity, or transcultural approaches to the history of Rome and/or late antiquity. This position is a continuing, tenure-track, 9-month appointment to start August 16, 2024. Tenure will be housed in either the School of History and Philosophy or the School of Languages & Linguistics.
The successful candidate will contribute to the History and Classics programs. Teaching is primarily at the undergraduate level but may also include graduate courses. The successful candidate should be prepared to teach general education courses in World History and Roman Civilization; share in teaching graduate courses in History; and teach topics courses for Classics and History in the candidate’s areas of interest. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active program of scholarly research and publication appropriate to the discipline, support student research, advise and mentor students, and engage in appropriate service activities. The typical teaching load for untenured TT faculty is two courses per semester.
PhD in Classics, History, or a closely related field. ABD applicants will be considered if all requirements for the PhD will be completed by August 15, 2024.
