The History Department in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, academic-year Assistant Professor of Ancient history. Appointment to begin September 12, 2019. The successful candidate will have research expertise and the ability to teach upper-division and graduate courses in Ancient history and in other areas related to the candidate's specialization(s), as well as the ability to teach lower-division World History and/or Western Civilization survey courses.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to, or potential for, teaching excellence and scholarly activity. Faculty members are also expected to engage in service activities appropriate to their rank and experience. The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with students, staff and faculty from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
The typical teaching load is 12 units (three courses) per quarter, with a reduction in course load in each of the first two years to help establish an active program of research and professional development. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Initial appointment is for two years, subject to renewal. An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in History or a closely related field by date of appointment is required.
