The Byzantine Coins and Seals collections of Dumbarton Oaks are among the finest and most comprehensive in the world. New display cases in the Museum have increased our capacity to exhibit our collections, while a dedicated object study seminar room can be used for teaching with the collections, as well as for consultation by fellows and visiting scholars. Dumbarton Oaks continues to add actively to its collections and is currently undertaking two major online catalogues of Byzantine Seals and Coins.

The Museum seeks a dynamic and knowledgeable Assistant Curator of Coins and Seals who will be responsible for the care, organization, and study of the collections. The Assistant Curator will be active in scholarly research and dissemination of information about the collections in print and digital media, and will act as project manager and editor of the online catalogues of Seals and Coins. The Assistant Curator will work with colleagues and scholars to develop ambitious exhibitions that will activate the collections both as objects of aesthetic and scholarly connoisseurship and as historical evidence. The incumbent will have a keen interest in outreach to the numismatic community, and in educational opportunities for students of different ages and backgrounds.

 Duties and Responsibilities

• Act as project manager, cataloger, and editor for the Online Catalogue of Byzantine Seals and the Online Catalogue of Byzantine Coins.
• Manage and supervise consultants, interns, and academic appointments contributing to seals and coins digital projects.
• Plan and deliver displays of coins and seals online and in the museum galleries, in consultation with museum staff.
• Identify new object acquisition and conservation priorities and track auctions, in collaboration with special advisors and scholars.
• Coordinate and teach the Dumbarton Oaks Coins and Seals Summer School; lead planning and delivery of educational programming utilizing the collections.
• Facilitate and promote the study and use of the coins and seals collections by fellows, visiting scholars, and other researchers.
• Liaise with donors, track and manage donations.
• Perform related duties as required.

 Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Master’s degree in Art History, Classics, History, or related field. Three years of experience in exhibition organization, scholarly research and publication.

Additional Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent in Byzantine Studies, Byzantine Art History, or other appropriate field. Demonstrated expertise in Byzantine sigillography and numismatics. Five or more years of relevant museum experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Teaching experience at university level. Prior experience mentoring students, stewardship, and fostering donor relations.

The successful candidate will have a strong record of research and curatorial experience, excellent communication skills, and demonstrated ability to work successfully with a broad range of visitors, general public, collectors, colleagues and international scholars. Ability to work collegially in a team environment. Experience with digital humanities projects. Strong interest in public programming, including gallery talks, school visits, development of online lesson plans and other resources. Excellent computer skills, including familiarity with digital publication, imaging software, databases, spread sheets, and other data storage and retrieval systems.
