Libraries and Cultural Resources (LCR) at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment as Numismatics Curator, Nickle Galleries, at the rank of Assistant Curator. The Assistant Curator will join the professional team of Nickle Galleries in all aspects of activity, and in supporting the strategic direction of Libraries and Cultural Resources and teaching and learning across disciplines at the University of Calgary.
Nickle Galleries is a university museum with an established history of challenging, relevant and successful exhibitions and public programs. The Nickle has three areas of concentration for its exhibitions and collections: modern and contemporary art, with a focus on Western Canada; numismatics, with strength in ancient coins and modern paper money; and textiles, with an emphasis on Asian carpets. The Nickle presents a full complement of temporary exhibitions and ongoing public programming to engage students and scholars and to collaborate both nationally and internationally. Composed of over 20,000 objects, the Numismatics Collection has been deemed one of the top 5 research collections in North America for its holdings of Hellenistic coins, and overall is the largest and most important academic numismatic collection in Canada.
Reporting to the Chief Curator, Nickle Galleries, the Curator of Numismatics will be responsible for the management, conservation, description, and development of the prestigious Numismatics Collections. The Curator of Numismatics will be responsible for research and scholarship related to the collection for description, for exhibition, for teaching and learning, for facilitating access to the collection by faculty, students and researchers, and for the development and growth of the collection. As part of the curatorial team, the Curator also shares responsibility for the professional practices and outreach of Nickle Galleries across all exhibitions and programs.
As an academic staff position, appropriate participation and involvement in scholarship, teaching and service is expected.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in relevant discipline (for example Greek and Roman Studies, Curatorial Studies)
- Demonstrated expertise and experience in major areas of numismatics including ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Celtic, Medieval, European and modern, as well as pre-coinage currency collections
- Evidence of exhibitions curated, program development and academic support
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
- Excellent project management skills
- Working knowledge of relevant ancient and modern languages appropriate to the specialty within numismatics
