ARISC is an American Overseas Research Center, an independent not-for-profit, that supports research in and about Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, both in the South Caucasus and the US. A member of the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC), ARISC offers fellowships, programming and research support.

The following ARISC Fellowships have an application deadline of December 9, 2022.

ARISC Graduate/Postdoctoral Fellowships support projects in all fields in the social sciences, humanities, and related sciences. Awards are meant to help cover travel and/or living expenses in the South Caucasus. Graduate students enrolled in accredited degree-granting programs in the U.S. or Canada, (students graduating in spring 2023 are eligible to apply) and postdoctoral or early-career scholars (scholars who have received their PhD since 2018) are eligible to apply. The fellowships are limited to U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, Canadian citizens, and Canadian permanent residents. Applicants must be ARISC members (student, individual, or institutional).

Research and Mentoring Fellowships support research and mentoring activities in the South Caucasus. The goals of the fellowship are 1) to support research in and the study of the South Caucasus; 2) to select, recognize and financially support individuals who demonstrate high potential to contribute to research in this region; 3) to support a mentoring relationship that will both develop the academic skills of the mentee and strengthen ties between the US and host country. Projects in all fields in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences are eligible. All projects must include one or more undergraduate and/or graduate students from Armenia, Azerbaijan, and/or Georgia as part of the mentoring requirement. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Short Term Research Fellowships support projects in all fields in the social sciences, humanities, and related sciences. Projects proposing research on studying climate change as well as pandemic response are especially encouraged, but all strong proposals on other topics will be given full consideration. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Junior Research Fellowships support early-career postdoctoral scholars working on projects in all fields in the social sciences, humanities, and related sciences. The ARISC Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) will fund one early-career scholar for 1-3 months of research in the South Caucasus to help cover transportation, lodging, meals and incidental expenses, and other expenses needed to support the scholar’s research in the South Caucasus. The fellowships are limited to U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents.

Collaborative Heritage Management Grants in the Republic of Armenia support collaborative teams working towards the preservation and conservation of the Republic of Armenia’s archaeological and historical heritage. These grants require active participation of both American and Armenian principal investigators (PI) in all aspects of the collaborative project.

Collaborative Heritage Management Fellowships in Azerbaijan, Georgia support collaborative teams working towards the preservation and conservation of Azerbaijan’s or Georgia’s archaeological and historical heritage. These fellowships require active participation of both American and Azerbaijani or Georgian principal investigators (PIs) in all aspects of the collaborative project.

ARISC Small Grants support projects in all fields in the social sciences, humanities, and related sciences. Awards are meant to help cover the cost of transportation, lodging, meals and incidental expenses, and other expenses needed to support a scholar’s research in the South Caucasus. Small Grants are limited to Armenian citizens, Azerbaijani citizens, and Georgian citizens. Projects proposed by Master’s and Ph.D. students are especially encouraged, but all strong proposals will be given full consideration.
