The British School at Rome (BSR) Library and Archive are the home to unique and outstanding resources as well as special collections that have been acquired over the years since the inception of the activities of the institution in 1901. We are seeking to appoint a self-motivated and organised graduate to work on the John Ward-Perkins archaeology archive. He or she will do a survey of the Ward-Perkins material, with the aim of taking a part of the photographs and archaeological records that has not been fully studied (specifically, a sector of Ward-Perkins’s Mediterranean-wide interests which did not relate to the South Etruria survey area), and both digitise it and write it up for publication. In addition, he or she will take charge of the Rome-Ankara-Libya related material in the Ward-Perkins photographic archive, in particular the photographs relating to the Inscriptions of Roman Tripolitania, the digital versions of which are available in the BSR repository, and material relating to Asia Minor (including Constantinople/Istanbul), to create metadata records to a standard suitable for migration to the BSR’s digital platform. The successful candidate will thus provide support for the cataloguing, digitisation and online publication of our collections data which are stored at the BSR an d are managed and curated by the Library and Archive team. The successful candidate will play a significant role in assisting with the general assessment and understanding of the archival materials and their description, and will extensively work with the cataloguing systems and platforms currently adopted in the Library and the Archive (Koha and ArchivesSpace).
This position would be ideal for a graduate seeking practical experience working in archives (e.g. as a prerequisite in applying for a postgraduate library/archive training course), or for a graduate with a strong interest in cultural heritage of the Mediterranean.
This is a part-time post (35 hours per week), based in the BSR’s Rome headquarters, in Via Gramsci, 61 – 00197, Rome. The appointment is fixed term for one year (from 1 September 2021). Successful candidate will be expected to live and work in Rome.
Applicants should be eligible to work in Italy. If the successful applicant needs to have a visa to work, it will be his or her responsibility to apply for it. The BSR will assist in this insofar as it is possible.
