‘All Who Encounter This Book’: The Transmission and Reception of Late Antique and Medieval Texts in Syriac Manuscripts, Irish College, Leuven, December 14–16, 2022

The purpose of this conference is to explore the transmission and reception of texts in their Syriac manuscript contexts. Our focus will be on the flourishing of Syriac literary production in the late antique and medieval period.

We will discuss a broad variety of Syriac literatures, including biblical, exegetical, historiographical, polemical, ascetic, and mystical texts.

Topics of particular interest include:

  • The collection and organisation of knowledge in manuscripts.
  • Selecting, abbreviating, compiling, and annotating as intellectual practices in late antique and medieval times.
  • Texts translated into Syriac, their manuscript reception, and the practices of their translators.
  • Questions of authorship and attribution.
  • Contexts of manuscript creation and use.
