The University of Edinburgh School of History, Classics and Archaeology seeks to recruit an Academic Network Facilitator to support the activities of the International Network award entitled “Emotions through time: from antiquity to Byzantium.” The Network is generously supported by the Leverhulme Trust.

The post-holder will provide day-to-day project management and organisation of the network's workshops and end of project conference, and undertake related editorial tasks. The post-holder will also be responsible for encoding of source material and metadata used in support of the project’s digital archive.

This is a part time (21 hours per week) fixed term post.

Main Responsibilities

  • Responsible for creating and populating the project’s digital archive through the encoding of visual and text-based sources using defined metadata provided by the project partners, working closely with colleagues in Information Services and the Vienna Digitales Forschungsarchiv Byzanz. Providing feedback to project partners on gaps/inconsistencies with the metadata provided, including recommending solutions/providing recommendations. (50%)
  • Undertaking editorial tasks in support of the project’s publications, including: copy-editing; indexing; compiling bibliographies; checking the accuracy of English translations being used as digital archive sources; providing own translations where competent to do so. (30%)
  • Providing administrative coordination and support for four planned project events (three workshops and one final conference), for example, liaising with project partners and external attendees, organizing travel for all participants, catering and accommodation bookings, compiling programmes of activity, ensuring that events keep within the project budget, etc. (10%)
  • Responsible for creating and updating the project website, creating new content in respect of the project’s activities as well as uploading content created by partners. (10%)

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • An undergraduate degree in a Classics or Medieval History-related subject plus some relevant experience
  • An excellent knowledge of Ancient Greek, including experience of translation to English
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience of external communications
  • Strong organisational and planning skills
  • A team player who can also work on own initiative with most of the work being independent
  • Excellent proofreading skills
  • Strong attention to detail, and ability to work to a high degree of accuracy
  • Excellent time management skills, and an ability to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines
  • Experience of working collaboratively to support a wide range of project partners based at multiple sites
  • Enjoys working with a wide range of colleagues and audiences

Desirable:

  • A postgraduate degree in Classics, Byzantine Studies, Medieval History or a related discipline
  • Experience in website development, authoring and editing
  • Knowledge of XML and TEI
  • Experience of supporting an international project, dealing with multiple project partners from different cultural backgrounds
