The Latin/Greek Institute offers total-immersion programs in Latin or Ancient Greek that enable students to master the material normally covered in two to three years in a single summer. Founded in 1973 as a collaborative effort between Brooklyn College and the City University Graduate Center, the institute is the most intensive summer language program of its kind. All programs are team-taught by experienced instructors. Hourly rotation of faculty provides for exposure to a variety of approaches, and faculty closely mentor and advise students.

The institute is held at the CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue, in Manhattan. The Graduate Center is easily accessible by all major means of public transportation.

In the first six weeks of the Basic Program in Greek, students work through the entirety of Hansen and Quinn's Greek: An Intensive Course. During this time, students master the forms and syntax of the language while reading relatively simple selections of unadapted prose and poetry.

In the final four weeks of the course, students read longer texts in the morning and, in the afternoon, survey major authors and genres ranging from the Archaic through the Hellenistic periods. They also have two opportunities each day for additional readings at sight. Core texts in the basic Greek program include Plato's Ion and Euripides' Medea. Supplementary lectures (e.g., on textual criticism, the history of the Greek language, meter, rhetoric) provide further enrichment. The program concludes with a two-week elective in which students choose an author to read and analyze in even greater depth.

The deadline for international applicants seeking a visa sponsored by Brooklyn College is March 6, 2020.

Scholarships
Students at the Latin/Greek Institute have the opportunity to apply for a number of scholarships to support their studies. Interested students must submit an application for admission to one of the LGI's programs, plus a separate scholarship application. Details about each opportunity can be found on each scholarship page. Students may submit a single scholarship application to be considered for the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Scholarships, Floyd L. Moreland Scholarships, and Hardy Hansen Prize. All scholarship applications are due on March 27, 2020 (deadline for international applicants seeking a visa sponsored by Brooklyn College is March 6, 2020).

Since 2010, the Kress Foundation has supported tuition fellowships for LGI students preparing for careers as art historians. If you are interested in learning Latin or Greek in order to conduct research on art historical or archaeological material, please contact the LGI office about applying for a Kress Fellowship as soon as possible.
