15th International Congress of Greek and Latin Epigraphy, Vienna, August 28–September 1, 2017
The Department of Ancient History, Papyrology and Epigraphy of the University of Vienna and the Institute for the Study of Ancient Culture – Division “Documenta Antiqua” of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, in cooperation with the AIEGL, are pleased to invite you to the 15th International Congress of Greek and Latin Epigraphy. The conference will take place in Vienna from 28th August to 1st September 2017. The main subject of the congress is ‘Languages – Culture of Writing – Identities in Antiquity’.
Addressing this topic, two plenary sessions are dedicated to the relationship between the indigenous or local epigraphic cultures of the ancient Mediterranean area and the dominant respective Greek or Roman culture. The focus is on those regions and societies of the ancient world which have several languages and scripts existing simultaneously in their epigraphic culture. In a third plenary session outstanding new inscriptions will be presented. And finally the winners of the Géza Alföldy-scholarship (call and grant by the AIEGL) will present their papers in a fourth plenary session.
In addition, there will be twelve thematic panels with 5-7 lectures each on the following topics:
- Tituli novi Graeci
- Tituli novi Latini
- Society
- Religion and magic
- Inscriptions in comparison to papyri and coins
- Administration and law
- Epigraphy of Late Antiquity and Byzantine age
- “Small epigraphy”
- Carmina
- Databases
- Economy
- Workshop (work in progress)
You are invited to submit a proposal for a paper for one of these sessions to the responsible chair before 30th April 2016. The lecture must not be longer than 20 minutes and shall be held in one of the usual congress languages.
